What if a person knew of something dangerous to society at large, something that has caused the deaths of thousands, something that had stifled the world’s understanding of science, causing an increase of violence and mayhem over the whole planet?  An infection of the brain if you will, causing over half of the population to make confused arguments based on unseen angels and demonic ghosts that they alone could see, feel or believe?  Does the news media not have an obligation to at least present the story even if the reception will cause widespread panic and discomfort to those infected?

3 1/2 Years ago, I received an e-mail from my cousins in North Carolina that featured a photo of current President George Bush; in it they went on to describe to me how God was guiding this man and his presidency.  There can be little doubt that the religious right swayed the vote in both 2000, and in 2004 in favor of Bush, so we can forever be in debt to these Christians and their God guided president for all the hardships sure to follow this presidency.  I wonder how many are still fooled, how many still think that Bush was guided by God after seeing the absolute failures of this presidency?  The beat goes on people, we today are still mired just as our ancestors were as we continue to suffer under the delusions of those that follow religious creeds… the hits just keeps on coming!

Yet, I can’t get published when I write about the effects of Christianity on our society; oh, don’t get me wrong, I don’t take it personal, I know there are many like me that feel the same way who are out there writing and not getting published either.  The media not only ignores those of us in society at large that aren’t religious, they also play a hand in spreading this disease as almost every newspaper in America has a section where religious groups are allowed to spread their nonsense to the masses; believe it or not, they’re usually not charged for this service, as it’s considered a ‘public service’ announcement.  So, while the fastest growing minority in the US is ignored (the non-religious), the largest shrinking majority, those who profess to a religious creed, gets free advertisements… yet they are a shrinking majority, want to know way?

It’s because people are catching on folks, even without the free propaganda people are finally getting the fact that all mainstream religions of today are bastions of tom foolery!  And seeing how bad the Bush Presidency was/is, they are finally understanding that we don’t need men as leaders that believe they have divine providence guiding them; as a matter of fact, the only good thing that has come from this presidency is the glaring fact (as if we needed reminding after the last 8,000 years) that God does not guide men at all and most importantly, religion harms society!

That’s right!  We finally have facts to back up the theory that religion as a whole harms society; in fact, any search engine will provide data that shows the least religious societies such as Japan and Sweden, are the least violent, have less suicides, have less unwanted pregnancy, and are more stable in general than the most religious.  Worse yet, the US ranks near or at the very bottom for developed countries in the worst categories, and guess what?  You got it!  We’re also one of the most religious!

Recent studies in US prisons showed an overwhelming majority are believers when compared to the general population.  In other words, the US population has percentage wise about 15% who aren’t believers, the prison population is about .02% non believers… less than 1%!  How can it be said with numbers like these that believing in a deity makes one more moral than those who do not prescribe to such beliefs?

Certainly there is a cause and effect argument that can be made here, a sort of post hoc fallacy if you will; but it can’t be denied that the most religious societies simply aren’t faring as well as the non.  It could be because religious people defend their dogma no matter the evidence against it.  Remember years ago, long before 9-11 when Bush made that speech against stem cell research?  Here again we find dogma trumping science to the general harm of our society, and if any of you reading this think that GW’s response to this legislation wasn’t based on his religion, I have a bridge I want to sell you.

Why does Bush feel that he has the right to push his faith on our country?  Why does he feel that he knows what God wants him to do?  Why are believers hearing imaginary voices in their heads?  As stated above, they have a mental illness!  If anyone that weren’t Christian were to state the outlandish things I’ve seen Christians say, then they’d be committed… I’ve seen them handling snakes, spinning around on the floor, and almost all of them still think God was with Bush among a plethora of actions committed by Christians in this modern age that is more than slightly insane… Do I need more proof?

We read now about religious persecution from years past and can be thankful that modern society doesn’t allow the religious to continue their tyranny.  Yet we are still persecuted if you will, by those in society that want to push their religion, 9-11 was a glaring reminder what the religious are capable of, but the election of Bush is an example of the fact that we in modern society still have a long way to go!  I hope all of you that believe in rationality will join this fight with me in a non-violent way, a persuasive way that hopefully will snap the religious out of their comas so we as a society can continue grow towards a better planet!
